Your Guide to the "ScrubbedOut Grand Rounds" Suturing and Hand Tying Sessions

Hi Doctors and Future MDs,

I'm excited to see your enthusiasm for the upcoming Scrubbedout Grand Rounds live-stream session, where we'll be diving headfirst into the art of suturing and hand tying. As your guide on this exciting journey, I'm here to help you prepare for this hands-on experience and ensure you get the most out of it.

What You Need to Bring

The good news is that you do NOT need to invest in any fancy equipment for our suturing and hand tying session. I believe in making medical education accessible, so let's keep it simple:

What You'll Need:

  1. Suture Kit: For the suturing portion of our session, you'll need a suture kit. Before you rush out to buy one, check with your hospital or colleagues. Many hospitals have spare suture kits that they're happy to lend for practice. You'll need at least the following:

    1. Needle Driver

    2. Toothed forceps (toothed are the most common to suture with)

  2. Suture Mat: If you don't have a suture mat, don't worry. You can improvise with items commonly found in your kitchen. A piece of fruit (like an orange or banana) or even a raw chicken breast can serve as a makeshift suture mat. It's all about getting that feel for the right tension.

  3. Sutures: Some hospitals have a stash of expired sutures that are perfect for practice. Ask around and see if you can get your hands on some. It's a sustainable and cost-effective way to stock up for our session.

  4. Hand Tying Materials: For the hand tying segment, you have options. You can use sutures or get creative with a piece of rope or twine from your garage or hardware store.

  5. Tying Surface: You'll need something to tie around. This could be a sturdy light post, microphone stand, door handle or cable. Just make sure it's secure enough to practice on without any safety concerns.

  6. Gloves: While it's not mandatory, practicing with gloves is ideal. It simulates the clinical environment more accurately and helps you develop the tactile sensation required for precision. If you already have latex gloves at home, they should work perfectly.

Optional Purchase Recommendations (with Affiliate Links)

Again, you do not need to purchase anything, however if you choose to do so, here are some options. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases so by using these affiliate links, I get a small commission and you'll be supporting the ScrubbedOut Grand Rounds sessions and allowing me to continue providing valuable content to you. Your support is greatly appreciated!

1. Suture Kit: I personally use and recommend https://amzn.to/44K4zmD. It's a comprehensive kit that includes the instruments, a variety of sutures, and a suture mat that will get you started.

2. Suture Mat: For those who want to invest in a reliable suture mat, try https://amzn.to/3L9l1py. The reviews show it's durable and designed for repeated practice. See above if you want to get a complete suture pack instead of just the mat.

3. Sutures: If you'd like to have your own sutures for practice, consider https://amzn.to/3PvFS8M. This comes with 20 sutures of a variety of sizes and materials to help you simulate different clinical scenarios. Again, please check your hospital for any expired suture available to trainees before purchasing!

4. Gloves: If you choose to purchase gloves, these are generic medical gloves that are good for practicing. https://amzn.to/3RdCkJU For sizing, I have size 7.5 hands and I use a medium. You want them to fit as snug as possible.
