Updated: Mar 28, 2021

we took a last minute anniversary trip to maui! check out our favourites to get tips for your trip!

where to stay in maui

kihei:

  • nicely situated around the midpoint of the island and close to wailea and a relatively easy drive up to kapalua.

  • we stayed at a vrbo in kihei right on the beach - it was perfect!

where to eat in maui

poke:

  • forget the restaurants, go to your local supermarket and get their poke bowls! probably every visitor says this but i'm from the westcoast of canada and used to fresh seafood and this was the best poke i've ever had! and cheap!

  • tip: don't forget to grab a poke bowl for your flight - beats airplane food any day. while we were at the airport eating our (first) poke bowl, several people came by and asked where we got it

  • great spot down in Wailea for a casual bite

  • amazing desserts!

  • amazing place for a fancy date night

  • we had an amazing meal with an unbeatable view

  • definitely recommended

  • we went here to pick up food for our road to hana journey

  • great hearty breakfast

  • perfect place to get started for the road to hana!

tip: did i mention the poke?

best things to do in maui

  • we did the beginner spearfishing course at maui spearfishing academy. would highly recommend this to anyone who has been wanting to try spearfishing or free-diving. it felt very safe and our guide brought us to a great site.

  • great tour visiting several sites. proceeds go towards their foundation. they found the less crowded sites so that we could be together and had the opportunity to go to the back side of molokini, which was very cool.

road to hana:

  • an amazing drive with iconic hawaiian scenery

  • we used the GyPSy guide app which was great but there are many available

  • must see: bamboo forest - go and listen in silence - unreal experience, waimoku falls, black sand beach (very busy though)

  • things to know: the roads are very narrow. if you're not comfortable with this, hire a driver/tour

  • tips: start early (6AM) otherwise it gets very busy

tip: sunscreen can be very toxic to the reef and very negatively impact the ecosystem. hawaii has created a ban on substances harmful to reefs by 2021. make sure your sunscreen is reef safe by checking the ingredients for zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and avoiding the following list of chemicals

next time:

  • haleakala sunrise

  • if we were traveling solo we would stay in the same place

  • if we were traveling with kids, we would pick one of the resorts
